The two novellas contained in this volume make an excellent sampler of Slavko Zupcic’s distinct narrative style. In Barbie, by means of a sharp and raunchy language, he narrates the misadventures which flow from the relationship between Alfonso M. and the famous plastic doll. In Círculo croata, he uses family pictures and letters written in Serbo-Croatian to reconstruct the minutiae of a mission in the midst of WWII to transport sacred relics. Throughout these stories, Zupcic mesmerizes the reader and pulls them inescapably into a narrative that stimulates them from beginning to end.
